Evolution Korea
For a long time the scientific community in Korea has refrained from engaging with creationists, afraid that it could boost the credibility of the group. Silence is no longer an alternative.
The STR has been fighting to eliminate content from textbooks that discuss evolution, such as the discovery of the feathered dinosaur Archaeopteryx as an ancestral bird's ancestor. This is only one aspect of the evolution of the developmental paradigm.
What is Evolution?
Evolution is a theory of science that explains the evolution of genetic characteristics of living organisms over time. The theory is based on the fact that living organisms adapt to their environment, which can lead to variations in genes or even whole genomes. These changes could over generations lead to the creation of new species. The prevailing theory of evolution is known as natural selection, which describes the process that allows individuals with advantageous characteristics survive and reproduce more often than those with disadvantages. This variation in reproduction could, over time, lead to the development and emergence of new species.
The word "evolution" is derived from the Latin for unrolling or revealing has been used in a variety of different ways as the concept has developed, both in science and in other fields. Early evolutionists such as Erasmus Darwin (Charles’s grandfather) and Jean Baptiste de Lamarck believed that species were predetermined to change into a new species. The term"transmutation" was coined by Lamarck's student embryologist Etienne Geoffroy Saint-Hilaire, to describe this idea. Charles Lyell, in his Principles of Geology, published in 1833, criticized the idea of evolution and borrowed the term from Geoffroy's student.
Recently, evolutionary biologists have defined evolution as a process when living things develop characteristics that improve their chances of survival, or their ability to reproduce offspring. Over time, genetic variability can cause a population to develop new physical characteristics or biological functions. The shift in gene frequency is known as natural selection and it is the main driver of evolutionary changes. Changes that are not genetic, like an increase in muscle mass due to exercise or diet, can't be considered evolution because they aren't passed on to the next generation.
Despite the fact that evolution has stood the test of time and thousands of scientific studies however, creationists have taken advantage of the idea that the theory is controversial and argue that it should not be taught in schools. In South Korea, creationists won a few victories over evolution in textbooks for high school. This includes the removal of all references about the evolutionary history of humans and Archaeopteryx - a feathered dinosaur believed to be the ancestor of birds.
Why is Evolution Important?
Evolution explains how the Earth and all living species evolved. It is also a fundamental part of biology, and aids scientists to comprehend how living organisms operate and develop. Evolution also shows how different species are linked. Scientists study evolution to understand the natural world and also to make important discoveries like the development of new medicines.
The evidence for evolution is overwhelming. There is no other scientific theory that explains so many aspects of the universe and life on earth and has been rigorously tested and confirmed over the course of many years. Many people, even some religious leaders, are in favor of the scientific theory. It is important to understand that evolutionary biology does not conflict with religious beliefs, as the theory is based on objects, events and processes within the physical world.
In fact many religious people have discovered ways to reconcile their beliefs with the theory of evolution. For example, some Christians believe that God created the world through evolution and that humans have an ancestral connection with other animals.
It is crucial for science educators to advocate for the teaching of evolution. In certain countries, the anti-evolution movement is growing. In the United States, efforts to limit the teaching of evolution have made some progress in some states. In South Korea, a group called the Society for Textbook Revise (STR), an offshoot of the Korea Association for Creation Research is pushing for the removal of textbooks about the evolution of horses and the Avian ancestor Archaeopteryx.
While these are disturbing developments, it is also important to keep in mind that the evidence for evolution is overwhelming. The evidence for evolution comes from many sources, such as fossils, genetics and the behavior of living creatures. The evidence is also independently verified by other scientists.
The vast majority of scientists supports the theory of evolution. The reason for this is many different reasons. Scientists study evolution to discover practical solutions, such as developing medicines or developing new medicines, while others are driven by an interest in improving the quality of life for animals and plant species, generally to benefit humans. Some scientists are simply curious, while others have an intense belief in God.
What is Creationism?
Creationists are those who believe that God created the universe and everything within it. They also believe that the Bible is God's word and should be interpreted in a literal manner. Many creationists are Christians, but not all. Creationists are usually divided into two groups: Young Earth Creationists (YEC) or old earth creationists.
The most popular type of creationist is the YEC. They believe that God created the universe in the exact manner described in the Bible. They believe that the biblical account of the six days of creation is literal and that the universe and life on Earth were created just recently.
OECs might not be as popular However, their beliefs are just as fierce as the YECs. OECs believe the universe and Earth are billions of years old, and that evolution is a lie.
Both forms of creationism deny the idea that scientific principles like biogenesis and natural selection can explain how life started on Earth. They claim that evolution isn't possible because it would require the creation of a miracle, and the pioneers of modern science eschewed miracles for fear of losing credibility.
Some creationists accept naturalistic evolutionary as well as special creation. They consider their views to be "theistic evolution.” This is sometimes called "continuous creationism" or "evolution from the created species." In this belief system, God creates the original species and allows them to evolve over time. These evolutionary changes eventually will result in new species that are similar to the original.

They also reject the idea of abiogenesis and argue that the emergence of self-replicating organisms from nonliving matter is unattainable.
In general, creationists oppose the teaching of evolution at schools. However, certain scientists and educational institutions are more flexible and allow the inclusion of creationism and evolution in their curricula.
What exactly is Creationism in Korea?
When people think of creationism typically think of the United States. However, South Korea is also home to an anti-evolution movement. Publishers of high school textbooks have recently declared that they will be removing references to evolution from their editions. A group known as the Society for Textbook Revise (STR) is an unofficial body that is an offshoot of the Korea Association for Creation Research, has led the drive. The STR has won its first victory by removing from textbooks evidence of the evolution and ancestor of an avian, the Archeopteryx. The next step is to eliminate excerpts from Darwin’s infamous finch-research as well as on human evolution.
STR claims to have the support of 4000 families and individuals. Its aim is to root out what it believes is the "atheist materialism" that paints an unhopeful worldview for students. It also seeks to counter the influence of American creationists in the United States. A survey of the newest biology teachers found that about half do not believe in the concept of evolution. The causes aren't clear but could be due to religious beliefs or the absence of full-time creation scientists in the United States.
The KACR achieved many things through its seminars and lectures in the past. It has a bimonthly news magazine, Creation, and has published books. The most notable of these is a text on the natural sciences, with a creationist viewpoint, which sparked interest in college communities. In 1991 the year 1991, a minister and professor started teaching Creation Science in one university, and it is taught to this day.
On August 6th and 7th of 1993, KACR hosted a second International Symposium on Creation Research. It was held in conjunction with the opening of the World Expo in Daejeon. Six lecturers from abroad, including ICR's John Morris and Steven Austin presented to a crowd of more than a thousand. KACR members and KACR have also given lectures on the subject of creation science at major seminaries. KACR is planning to create a Creation Science Education Center.
